उद्वर्तन

उद्वर्तन or उबटन application, also known as Body Scrubbing is an important step in दिनचर्या (Daily Routine). it is advised to do daily उद्वर्तन before taking bath.

Dry powders of medicinal herbs like haridra, Musta, Daruhaldi, Triphala, Agaru etc are used in उद्वर्तन. It is scrubbed gently on body, either in dry form or mixed with oil or milk. Medicines with nice fragrances are used in उद्वर्तन to impart a long lasting smell and freshness.

During Diwali festival, everyone has a fond memory of उद्वर्तन or उबटन application by elders. उबटन powder is mixed with coconut milk or scented body oil and scrubbed liberally on body in early morning followed by a warm water bath. Nice fragrance and soft tender touch …that was the perfect start of the day. As Diwali comes in winter season, one tends to have a dry ,exfoliated skin. This is the science behind use of उद्वर्तन or उबटन application mixed with milk or oil.

Rainy season and typical itching…due to fungal infections…. a deadly combination to tackle. Damp humid environment with less sun exposure leads to fungal growth over walls. Even clothes are not dried properly and everyone is drenched in rains and mud, providing a suitable environment for fungal growth. Generally groin region, inner thighs, chest, below breast, arms are the sites affected. In this condition also dry उद्वर्तन application lessens the dampness and inhibits fungal growth.

Summer season and profuse sweat with unpleasant smell is the most common scenario. Here also उद्वर्तन or उबटन application decreases excessive sweating and prevents body odour.

One of the most important benefit of उद्वर्तन is its action on excess body fat. It helps to burn excessive fat and hence used in Obesity and related complications. It prevents lethargy & laziness and tone up skin & muscles.

Unlike soap it does not leave the skin dry. Rather it retains skin moisture and rejuvenates the skin.
